Carl Evers III, Director of Sustainability and Vice President, California Operations

An article from Perspectives From the Field

As an independent agricultural investment manager, we at AgIS Capital believe two of our strongest differentiating characteristics are the high levels of commitment our people demonstrate to their work and professions and the degree to which they invest themselves in serving and representing the interests of our clients. To acknowledge their importance to our business, and the value they add for our investors, we periodically profile members of our team.

Carl Evers joined AgIS Capital in 2021 and is an integral part of our California Operations and Sustainability efforts throughout the organization. Learn More About Carl:

Personal Background

I was born and raised in Modesto, California into a generational farming family. Growing up, my siblings and I would go with my father to visit farm properties he managed throughout California, whenever the opportunity arose. This, of course, made a profound impression on me, and I followed very closely in my father’s footsteps. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be in the farm management sector, and I have been blessed to have had that strong sense of purpose and direction my entire life. I could not wait until I was old enough to get a summer job working as a laborer for the local farm labor contractor to start putting in the time and learning the trade. It seemed no matter if it was work or play, if I was able to be outdoors, I was happy.

Educational Background

My grandfather and father, both of whom I am named after, graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with an Agribusiness degree. I knew I wanted to follow suit, so, without my parents’ knowledge, I applied under Cal Poly’s “early decision” program. When the standard application time came, my parents were surprised to know I had already been accepted! One of the greatest honors while attending university was being advised by Robert McCorkle, who advised my grandfather and father as well. He retired shortly after my graduation, so I count that as a huge blessing that I was able to learn from him and continue that legacy. In addition, I also earned a minor degree in Sustainable Agriculture while at Cal Poly.

Joining AgIS Capital

My professional background leading up to joining AgIS Capital consisted of a tremendous amount of building and growth; growth for the businesses I worked for, the clients I managed for, and of course for myself.

I had managed large acreages of permanent crop properties throughout California and Australia. During that time, I had found a passion for policy and advocacy and was able to exercise that primarily in the water resources area, in which I was responsible for a large asset platform in California. However, the opportunity to join AgIS Capital gave me something important in 2021: the chance to be part of a very entrepreneurial team and enterprise again.

The opportunity to grow with AgIS Capital and its clients is very exciting and a welcome challenge. Where some feel best when things are calm and steady, I find myself at my best when I am challenged by growth and new challenges to work on every day. The dual roles of managing our sustainability efforts and our California operations are such a privilege. Corporate and Client Sustainability is so important to get right, and with all the pitfalls of greenwashing and missteps out there these days, I welcome the responsibility of keeping our efforts on target and within our fiduciary duty. Farming is my passion, so the fact that I am also leading a team of professional farm managers on great assets in California just makes the role that much more rewarding!

Thinking About the Future

When I think about the future at AgIS Capital, all I can think about is “grow, baby, grow!” I have known the partners and many of my colleagues here for quite some time before joining AgIS Capital, and we have all built some impressive things together before, so I am sure what we will do here will continue to be quite impressive and rewarding for our clients for many years to come.

Free Time

My free time consists mostly of enjoying time outdoors with my family. My wife and I have two young daughters and, carrying on tradition, I try to involve them with farming as much as I can. Our two-year-old loves riding on farm equipment with me almost as much as our cattle dog does, and she helps me work on chores on our property in San Luis Obispo where we spend most of our time. On our property we operate a vacation rental and farm some lavender, with additional crops to come over time. I volunteer time at church, on the Water Education Foundation, the American Society of Farmland Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA), and local water agencies throughout California. When time allows after that, I am blessed to have family nearby and like to sneak in the odd hiking, hunting, and fishing trip when I can.
